The Arizona Summit Law School (Summit) Externship Program offers a vast array of opportunities for students to gain invaluable legal professional and networking experience, working off-campus with actual practicing lawyers, judges, and other professionals, while earning academic credit.

How Does the Externship Program Work?

At Arizona Summit Law School, all students are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of pre-approved placements, or develop their own field placement to be approved by the school. In either path you choose, you must participate in both parts of the Externship Program — the seminar class and field placement. The seminar class is a pass-fail class for two to twelve hours of academic credit. Each hour of academic credit requires fifty logged hours of work at the field placement. The required academic work is the same for all externship seminars, with the exception of the seven-, eight-, nine-, ten-, eleven- and twelve-hour credit class, which also requires a 15-minute presentation.

Who Can Participate in the Externship Program?

Students who have completed 28 credit hours and are in good academic standing can participate in the program.

Information for Interested Employers

Employers interested in hiring an extern for the Fall, Spring, or Summer terms may complete an Externship Job Posting Form. If employers are potentially interested in hiring an extern each term, please complete the Employer Directory Form to be listed in the Employer Directory as a pre-approved placement.

The number of student applications received each term depends on the number of students registered for the Externship Program and their particular areas of interest. Each term we typically have more placements than students, so we cannot guarantee a placement each term.  Please contact The Center for Professional Development at 602.682.6879 or cpdteam@azsummitlaw.edu to learn more.
